Sibu Msimang has built an inspiring career spanning more than two decades, earning her place as a respected name in South Africa’s fashion industry. Her brand, Sibu Msimang, has become synonymous with elegant, confidence-boosting designs created for women who want to stand out on every special occasion.
Hailing from Umlazi, Sibu’s journey into fashion was anything but conventional. Before stepping into the design world, she worked as a chef at Durban’s Royal Hotel, and later as an assistant supervisor at a lodge in Montclair. During her breaks, she would spend hours reading at the municipal library across the road – a habit that would ultimately change her life.
Inspired by the book Do It: A Guide to Living Your Dreams, she enrolled at the Durban University of Technology to study fashion design and never looked back. A former Durban Fashion Fair mentee, she has since established herself as a sought-after designer for matric dance gowns and bespoke ladieswear.
My Inspiration ...
“This is the story of a young woman who has recently moved from the city to the countryside by the sea. She finds herself captivated by the lush landscapes – especially a cactus growing along the seabed. Like that cactus, which has learned to adapt to the salty ocean environment, she too has learned to adapt.
She is also fascinated by ubuchwabasi – a type of grey bead that grows by the riverbed – and by how women are able to find raw materials in nature to create crafts.
As her perspective shifts, she begins to see life very differently, becoming more conscious and aware. She learns to move with the flow of life, trusting in her own divinity. This is a story about ease and flow and learning to adapt.”
